Phd UTK. Dr. Spiva delivered a revealing report on the US and world economy

on Friday November 30, 2007 had as it's guest speaker Ginny Weatherstone,
CEO of Volunteer Ministry Center. Ginny was at the meeting for the dual
purpose of receiving a donation in the amount of $5,000 and to update the
club on VMC's activities over the last year. Earl Kear presented the
donation which was received as a grant from Smith Barney in it's attempt to
invest in the Knoxville community. As a member of the club and employee of
Smith Barney, Earl was pleased to have the opportunity continue the
partnership between Smith Barney and KVR
and to arrange the contribution to such an excellent service organization in

speaker. Dr. Walter spoke on the health of citizens in Tennessee and across

Sweden. Mr. Kurt-Lennart Kalmsjo was accompanied by his daughter, Sofie
Teague, who now lives in Knoxville and her father-in-law Carroll Smith. It
was a pleasure to learn about Kurt's Rotary Club in Sweden as it was
established over 70 years ago and is very active in both national and

delivered a most interesting insider's view of the family lives of the
founding fathers of our country. We learned that much of the same problems

review of the pre and post World War II city of Oak Ridge, TN. Ray's stories
ranging from that of John Hendrix the Oak Ridge Prophet to the current
development of The New Hope Center at the entrance to Bear Creek are most

 | Knoxville Volunteer Rotary (KVR),
on Friday January 12, 2007, was honored to have as guest speaker Susan
Dakak, Senior Engineer with ARCADIS. Susan is a naturalized citizen of the
United States and was born and lived her early years in Iraq. Susan returned
to Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein to assist in the development of
water purification and treatment plants which is her engineering specialty.
It was most enlightening to our members to learn that there is a positive
opinion of accomplishments of both military and contracting firms in Iraq.
It was so different and enlightening to hear that Iraqis not only appreciate
what the US is doing for them and their country but also believe that they
are nearing a point of stability and defeat of insurgency in their country.

Smighelschi. Miahi held the audience with intrigue as he told of his Flight
To Freedom from then communist controlled Romania in his Jet Fighter
Trainer. The risk and sacrifices Miahi took to seek freedom should be a
lesson to every American. We have so much and often appreciate it so little.

on Friday September 15, 2006, was pleased to have as its speakers, Executive
Assistants to The Athletic Director at The University of Tennessee, Gus
Manning and Haywood Harris. Between the two our club experienced over 100
years of experience in the UT Athletic Department. Gus and Haywood shared
their experiences with coaches from General Neyland to Phil Fulmer. Sorry
coaches/players but your secrets are out and in Gus and Haywood's new book Once
a VOL Always A VOL. For an entertaining history of UT
football, the book is a must read and a great addition to any sports fans
library. All proceeds go to The Volunteers Athletic Scholarship Fund and can

on Friday August 25, 2006, was pleased to have as its speaker, Dr. Susan
Newman Huntsinger of The UT Cancer Institute
in Knoxville. Dr. Huntsinger was accompanied by Georgette Samaras, Education
Coordinator for the Cancer Institute, for the purpose of delivering
current information on cancer research and prevention/screening. The
information delivered served to enlighten and enhance members awareness and
to encourage actions taken to assist in avoiding the conditions that can
lead to severe cancer related issues. Below we have guidelines for men
and women to screen for cancer as well as contact information for The
University of Tennessee Cancer Center.

recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow was presented to John from the club. The
presentation was made by now past president Cheryl Light and member Earl
Kear. John and his leadership team officially take over at the July 7th

on Friday April 21, 2006, Knoxville Volunteer Rotary received a double honor
in it's speaker and receiving a new member. Jeff Stewart of the Tennessee
Smokies gave a review of the season and hopes for progress being made as the
season progresses. Also, Bill Potter with Austin-East High School was
installed as a member. Welcome Bill, we look forward to your ideas and

on Friday April 14, 2006, Knoxville Volunteer Rotary partnered with The
Tomato Head Restaurant on Market Square to raise money for it's
International Pure Water project. Funds are raised to dig wells and
install pumping systems in remote parts of the world where inhabitants have
no source. thanks to The Tomato Head for their vision and to all members of
KVR for their efforts. |

Charles Lindsey, Superintendent of Knox County Schools. Dr. Lindsey gave a
progressive and positive report on educational development in Knox County
relative to the State of Tennessee and the Nation. As might be expected, new
budget constraints call for delays and downsizing in programs as-well-as
greater creative actions and thinking to accomplish school goals. Thanks Dr.

on Friday December 31, 2005 enjoyed a review of Knoxville's history from
Bruce Wheeler, PhD. Dr. Wheeler spoke on the Truths and Myths of Knoxville
history as is presented in the second edition of his book "Knoxville,
Tennessee A Mountain City in the New South". Dr. Wheeler
describes Knoxville as a city that may seem to be southern in style, but in
fact is a city of the southern mountains that like all cities, has been
shaped in part by its surrounding hinterland as well as by the ideology and
culture of people migrating to Knoxville. Thanks to Bruce for a most

Perez, Knoxville's Fire Chief. Mr. Perez gave us several things to consider.
First have you installed and maintained Smoke Detectors in your
house? Next, have you programmed ICE into
your cell phone( ICE is short for Incase of Emergency which can be
programmed into your cell phone so EMS persons will know who to call if you
are in need of help; you can use ICE-1, 2,3 for additional numbers)? And
finally have you considered Earth Quake
insurance on your home? Evidently we live in an area subject to a future

Wilson marketing director for the Knoxville ICE Bears Hockey Team.
Preston revealed interesting incites into what is involved to deliver
professional hockey to the Knoxville area. We were able to get up close to
sticks, pucks and check each other (if was fair to all concerned). Barbara

We were pleased to induct two new members at Volunteer Rotary; Greg
Walker and Joe Dickey.Joe is the President and CEO of FGS & Associates,
a former VP and COO of TVA with responsibilities in non-nuclear power
generation and transmission. Joe also is an accredited executive associate
with the Institute of Independent Business where he consults with businesses
to grow and improve operations. Greg Walter is the owner of Walter and
Associates a commercial and residential real estate appraisal company. Greg
holds a BA from Ohio University in organizational communication with a minor
in business. Both Joe and

founder and owner of Marketing Dimensions of Knoxville. Aleex, former
director of marketing at St. Mary's, is the great niece of Andy Holt, past
president of UT, and spoke to our group on Dr. Holt's philosophy of "Friendly

on Friday October 14, 2005 was pleased to have as it's guest Rebecca Slone,
an attorney in Dandridge, TN., as it's guest speaker. Ms. Slone is the
co-founder of Noah's Arc, an animal rescue/refuge in Dandridge. The
organization is operated as a non-profit/Volunteer program with many
charitable persons responsible for it's success. This is a great cause for
our support in East Tennessee. You can offer many deferent levels of support
from volunteering your time or providing an adoptive home for a pet, to printing
out the below application to become a member of Noah's Arc. Also,

at Ruby Tuesday's located at Mercedes Place. We wish to express our
sincere thanks to manager Mark Chase and his staff for their exceptional
service to our community. We raised in excess of $750 to be used in

PRIDE OF THE SOUTHLAND BAND season with director Dr. Gary Sousa
as it's speaker. Dr. Sousa reviewed the last four weeks of intense
preparations by the band for its unequalled contribution to the
upcoming college football/basketball season. Dr. Sousa gave a, somewhat unknown,
historical account of the development of The University Of Tennessee Band

on Friday August 05, 2005 was honored to have Thomas Zacharia from
ORNL to present the unique and astounding benefits of the Super Computer
project he directs. The speed of data processing is faster than Jeff
Talman's wit and it stores 100,000 trees of data per day. I may be off a tad
on the trees but Jeff's wit is really only half (forgive me Jeff, I really
mean it as a compliment)! Thomas revealed that if we were alive 20 years
from now, the technology from the Super Computer age may keep us alive
forever. For those concerned, our club will still need new members. What an

on Friday April 29, 2005 was honored to have visitors from The
Philippines. We were informed by our visitor's about the history, customs, politics
and much more about their country. It was indeed our honor to have Bert Cruz
(a Rotarian in The Philippines), Noli Hernandez (a real estate developer),
Isa Aquino (a local politician/public servant), Mark Lopez (an English
Professor) and Christine Valdepenas (a graduate student in Special
education). This visit was part of GSE in District 6780 and made for a very
special Volunteer Rotary meeting. Click

on Friday April 22, 2005 enjoyed a day of both celebration and
dedication for Knoxville Rotarians. All came together on Knoxville's Market
Square to unveil a statue commemorating 100 years of Rotary International
and the impact it has had world wide. The unveiling was followed by entertainment
at the newly refurbished Tennessee Theater. Dr. Bill Snyder provided the
entertainment on the theater's historical organ. Click

on Friday April 15, was pleased to have CISV (Children's
International Summer Villages) represented by Chuck Priddy, Mary Lawrence
Woodhall, Tess Woodhall and Thomas Bryington. CISV brings children of 11
years of age together from all parts of the world based on the concept that
world peace will depend on the children and their future decisions relative
to the rest of the world. Both Tess and Thomas have participated in the CISV
process under the direction and guidance of leaders like Chuck and Mary

Taylor, Ph.D, with the University of Tennessee
Planetary Geosciences Institute. Dr. Taylor presented interesting

on Friday February 25th, was pleased to have as it's speaker Knoxville
Police Chief, Sterling Owens. Chief Owens gave an uplifting review of
the Knoxville police department. Knoxville has some of the best trained and
most successful personnel in the country. The introduction of new technology
is now or is being put in place to provide safer streets in the city. Much
of these technological improvements are being provided at no cost to the tax
payer and will further reduce the cost of the police department. The next
opportunity you have, tell a police office how much
you appreciate the effort they make to do a tough job. Click

on Friday January 14th, had as it's speaker Linda Galyon-Volunteer
Coordinator for The Knoxville Zoo. Linda presented both a historical
perspective of the Zoo as-well-as plans for the future. We were given facts
about the Zoo, such as, the first African Elephant born in captivity was at
The Knoxville Zoo and the Zoo is #1 in breeding of Red Pandas in the US and
#2 in the world. The accredited Zoo is home to almost 1,000 animals. Thanks
